In a photograph, in the sequence of some film, in television shows side streets of the main avenue of History are found. Detours that carry tragic or comic elements and testify to a naivety. In these byways lies my personal process of understanding and searching through pictorial interpretations and reconstructions. There, perhaps, are the paths that leave room for the readings of the byways of this world to breathe.
Through the removal and recomposition of pieces from historical photographs of Nikea, I follow my personal path to know and understand as much as possible my origin. Encountering history and recreating it, I create a world in which I reintroduce myself and exist anew. Some drawings illustrate Kyriaki Papathanasopoulou's book Refugee settlement in Nikea, Associations-Identities-Memory.
Nikea carries bitter memories of the tragic event of the Executions of Kokkinia in 1944 but also of what followed until recent years. All these are what invite us to transform their bitter taste through creative coexistence, constant vigilance and the cultivation of memory both individually and collectively. The action was carried out within the framework of the Places of Togetherness research program.
